JERUSALEM: After an Israeli strike that killed a senior Hezbollah commander in southern Lebanon the day before, Lebanon fired multiple rockets into northern Israel on Wednesday. Hezbollah identified the martyred commander as Taleb Sami Abdallah, born in 1969 and also known as Abu Taleb. The Israeli military verified Abdallah's death, along with three other fighters, during a strike on a command and control center.
In retaliation to the commander's death, a senior Hezbollah official promised to intensify attacks against Israel. "We will increase the intensity, strength, quantity, and quality of our attacks," Hashem Safieddine said during the funeral. Since Hamas' strike on southern Israel on October 7, which sparked the ongoing war in Gaza, Hezbollah and the Israeli army have exchanged almost daily cross-border fire.
The Israeli military said that about 90 rockets were detected crossing from Lebanon, with several intercepted and others starting fires in northern Israel. Temperatures have lately risen, worsening the issue and resulting in several brush fires on both sides of the border. The initial barrage was followed by a second volley of approximately 70 missiles, although nobody was injured were reported immediately by Israel's Magen David Adom emergency medical service.
In response to the killing, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for shooting dozens of Katyusha rockets against three Israeli locations and targeting a military plant with guided missiles. The organization reported that seven of its militants had been killed by Israeli fire since Tuesday, with one source claiming that four were killed with Abdallah. According to a Lebanese military source, Abdallah was "the most important Hezbollah commander killed since the start of the war," and the Israeli attack took place near Jouaiyya, around 15 kilometers from the border.
This battle followed eight months of cross-border violence in Lebanon, which has killed at least 467 people, over 90 of them are civilians. Israeli officials confirmed the deaths of 15 troops and 11 civilians. Tens of thousands of civilians have been displaced on both sides since the violence erupted following the Hamas strike on October 7th. According to Israeli authorities, the strike killed 1,194 people in Israel, the majority of whom were civilians. In reprisal, Israel's onslaught against Hamas has killed at least 37,164 people in Gaza, the majority of them are civilians, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
