Prime Minister of Israel Netanyahu solidifies control over gaza war, dissolved war cabinet.

Description

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has shut down the war Cabinet that was coordinating the combat in Gaza. This decision came after Benny Gantz, a crucial member, resigned the government because he was uncomfortable with way Netanyahu managed the the war. Without Gantz, Netanyahu is now relying more on his ultra-nationalist friends who oppose a cease-fire, complicating peace talks even further.

Netanyahu will now discuss military topics in smaller groupings, including his security Cabinet, which comprises far-right members who want to reoccupy Gaza and reject cease-fires. The war Cabinet was originally formed to make decisions without the influence of far-right lawmakers, with Gantz, Netanyahu, and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in command.

This transformation occurs at a key juncture. Israel and Hamas are discussing a cease-fire in exchange for hostages held by Hamas. Israeli troops are continue fighting in Gaza, and there has been a fresh escalation along the border with Lebanon. However, rocket assaults from Hezbollah in Lebanon have lessened recently, probably due to the Muslim feast of Eid al-Adha and a visit from a U.S. envoy trying to calm the situation.

Netanyahu is facing pressure from both the United States and his own administration. His ultra-nationalist allies threaten to destabilize the administration if Israel agrees to a cease-fire. Critics allege Netanyahu is swayed by these partners and his desire to remain in power, but he insists he is operating in Israel's best interests.

Gantz's resignation has upended Israeli politics. He was seen as a calming figure who raised Israel's worldwide profile. Another resignation followed, and former army chief Gadi Eisenkot also left the war cabinet. Without Gantz's party, Netanyahu will have to rely more on his far-right friends to keep his cabinet together.
